Often times, the decision to conduct business rests on how a customer interprets your brand identity and brand promise,-- a simple impression, comment, or action, perceived or real. She determines if your service or product is unique and provides the sought-after value. Without accurate articulation of your brand identity and promise, you may lose the advantage of uniqueness and potentially the sale.

What is a brand identity and why is it important?

Your brand identity is YOU, controlling all the elements that impact your company?s image, in a focused and controlled way to influence the customer. It is the promises you make to yourself, your business and potential clients. Keeping these proomises will position you as unforgettable, unique and special, and form your brand identity.

Business Cards
My friend is a graphic designer and, although she likes designing wonderful exciting things, much of her business is designing Business Cards for young businesses. Although she likes designing Business Cards to some extent, she is longing to get into the more exciting aspects of design and is constantly telling me how bad she feels that all she ever gets to design are Business Cards. We met for a drink a couple of months ago and she was really feeling low about the fact that she was not feeling professionally fulfilled. However, I told her that she needed to think a little longer termm before getting depressed about her work. I told her to think about what would happen when all of the people she had designed Business Cards for were having real success in their businesses. I said to her that they would look back at who designed for them and think of her immediately. She would surely reap the rewards when they wanted a much larger job completing. She seemed to take on board what I said and, as I predicted, a month down the line she got a really large job from one of the companies she had worked for earlier.

My brother is a mechanic and, although he is very happy in his job which the whole family are very pleased about, my mother finds it very difficult because he always comes home covered in Grease from the cars. Obviously, there are a lot of other stains as well on his overalls but my mother says that it is the Grease that is really difficult to get out in the wash. She is constantly going on at him about it and, although we all think it is ridiculous as he is bound to get Grease on his clothes in a job like that, she takes no notice of any of us and carries on scrubbing at his overalls. I took her to one side the other day and told her to leave his overalls alone. I had been to see my brother at his work a couple of days before and what struck me was that the other staff were quite happy to work in dirty overalls. I told my mother this but she would not hear of it and said there was no way she was going to send my brother to work in dirty clothes. I think he is just going to have to put up with my mother`s eccentricities if he wants an easy life! Either that or leave home altogether!
